Where is Your Treasure?

[quote_box author=”Jesus” profession=””]“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “[/quote_box]

It is hard to make this tangible. How can you really tell where your treasure is?

Do I like Coffee or Sushi more… I don’t know. I like them both a lot but I can’t say which one is greater because they are so different. That is how I feel when I ask myself, “Is there anyone or anything that I love more than God?” I want to say no; but I need to be humble enough to admit that, I might not be living up to that response in my heart.

This self-questioning (spurred on by a study my church is doing) collided with an ongoing conversation I have been having with Bryan about how to live sacrificially while buying a home. These two topics came together when I realized this:

When you find yourself caring for the future needs of object A, and to do so you ignore the immediate needs of object B, object A is your treasure and your heart lies with it.

For example:
You love your standard of living so much so that you set aside for its future without considering the family in your church that is currently having trouble putting food on the table.

You love your reputation so much that in order to protect its future, you ignore the immediate need for friendship of the socially awkward person at work.

You can put almost anything into this scenario and see that there is a way to discover how much you treasure something. What if you were described like this: You love Jesus so much that you ignore the immediate needs of your finances, career, and comfort to invest in the future of your relationship with him.

Denying ourselves and following Jesus is precisely what we are called to do. That is the essence of a life defined by a complete love of God. To love God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength we have to be willing to deny care to our dreams, relationships, reputation and future.

Outside of Christ, all of those things will fade anyway. Our dreams will seem small compared to his glory. Our relationships will disappoint us compared to his perfection. Our reputation will be meaningless when everything is brought into the light, and our future without him can only end in death. But with Christ our dreams can become reality as they align with the will of the Creator, our relationships can flourish in the abundant love given to us, our reputation can be established as a child of the King of Kings and our future of eternal life is secure.

The sacrifice is an investment.

There may be days when it feels like a burden to sacrifice and we may envy others as they live life with ease and comfort; however, the price they pay is much higher. They sacrifice the abundant life God has for them, to care for the future of their worldly treasures. But that future will come to an end and ours will not.

Pretend that two people had $140,000. The first took the money and bought a house. He had to do yard work, unclog sinks and fix leaks. The other rented a posh city loft that had a skyline view. He never had to maintenance anything and he had his laundry sent out. At first glance someone may think that the latter had more wealth. But In 7 years time when the money runs out and the creditors come knocking, the tenant of the loft will look around and see that his time is up, while the first man sits on his porch, coffee in hand and thanks God for all he has been given.

The choice to follow Jesus is a worthy investment, and the inheritance will last forever. Living a life where you choose to buy smaller houses, rent smaller apartments, and hold on to your belongings loosely is building heavenly equity. Money and time spent ministering to and furthering the Kingdom of God will never lose its value.
