Just Some Encouragement

I’ll be honest. It was a crazy weekend in the Morrison home and there were too many amazing opportunities to bond as a family for me to stop and write. However, Kate’s post on Thursday inspired me to finally begin reading C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters. I’ve been devouring this book every moment I get and this quote has stuck with me for the last several days.

[quote_box author=”C.S. Lewis” profession=””]”Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.”[/quote_box]

If you are unfamiliar with the premise of the book, it consists of 31 letters written by an elder demon (Screwtape) in Hell to his junior demon/nephew (Wormwood). In each letter, Screwtape is instructing Wormwood in how to derail and neutralize a particular man’s faith.

I’ve found that there is nothing more neutralizing in my life than when I feel that God is distant or absent in my circumstances. Yet, it’s in these moments where our faith is often strengthened the most. As Screwtape writes to Wormwood earlier in the same letter,

[quote_box author=”C.S. Lewis” profession=””]”Now it may surprise you to learn that in His efforts to get permanent possession of a soul, He relies on the troughs even more than on the peaks; some of His special favourites have gone through longer and deeper troughs than anyone else. The reason is this. To us a human is primarily food; our aim is the absorption of its will into ours, the increase of our own area of selfhood at its expense. But the obedience which the Enemy demands of men is quite a different thing. One must face the fact that all the talk about His love for men, and His service being perfect freedom, is not (as one would gladly believe) mere propaganda, but an appalling truth.”[/quote_box]

So if you’re in the trough, feeling that God is distant or even that he may have forsaken you, let this be an encouragement. He is still there. Not only that, but he may be using your circumstances to prepare you for what’s to come. Even when it may not seem like it, he is faithful and he is good. There are few ways we can glorify him more than recognizing that when it’s least obvious.

[quote_box author=”Micah 7:8″ profession=”English Standard Version”]Rejoice not over me, O my enemy;
when I fall, I shall rise;
when I sit in darkness,
the Lord will be a light to me.[/quote_box]
